What is Low-NOx?

NOx is an abbreviation used to describe Nitrogen Oxides, a family of reactive and toxic greenhouse gases. When fuel is burned at high heat, such as in the heat exchanger of your furnace, nitrogen oxide gases are released. The main nitrogen oxides created in the combustion process are called “NOx,” including NO and NO2.

A Low-NOX furnace has a burner that releases low levels of NOx in the fuel combustion process. Such a furnace can minimize nitrogen oxide emissions. These burners are designed to control fuel and air mixing at each burner in order to produce larger and more balanced flames. As a result, peak flame temperature is lowered and has less NOx formation.
