Understanding Heat Pumps: A Feature on the Lennox MPB Mini-Split Heat Pump

Posted: 2019-01-29

When sized, installed, and used properly, heat pumps can bring an array of benefits, both financial and environmental. These appliances can be used to heat or cool a space through radiators, air convectors, and underfloor heating systems. In some cases, heat pumps can also be used to heat water for your home.

Four Seasons Air Specialists is your friendly HVAC company in Mahtomedi MN that offers a variety of heat pumps designed to meet your heating or cooling needs.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a system that “pumps” or moves heat from one place to another by using a compressor and a circulating structure of liquid or gas refrigerant, through which heat is taken out from outside sources and pump indoors.

Heat pumps are considered the new “think green” technology for homes because of their energy efficiency. Most homes use heat pumps for heating purposes, but they are also becoming more common for summer cooling uses in the last decade or so.

How It Works

A heat pump works in the same way a refrigerator does. The refrigerant flows through linked indoor and outdoor coils. When used for heating, as the liquid refrigerant flows to the outdoor coil, it passes through an expansion valve that results in a rapid expansion of the liquid, causing it to turn into gas. Then, as it goes through the indoor coil, it is able to absorb heat energy from the air. Before it flows through the indoor coil, it passes through a compressor where the gas is compressed, resulting in an increase of both the pressure and temperature. As it moves through the indoor coils, the gas condenses, releasing heat.

Heat pumps give you the option to either heat or cool a space effortlessly with the touch of a button using a wall monitor, a remote, or even a smartphone app. Due to the nature of its design, a heat pump is able to heat or cool a space very quickly and sustain the desired temperature.

These devices are much economical to operate and have a lower carbon footprint. In a general sense, a heat pump can be about two to four times more efficient than a conventional heating system.

Because of their high-efficiency ratings, heat pumps are able to save you a considerable amount of money on utilities. If you are planning on staying in your current home long-term, a heat pump may be a great investment for you.
