3 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Summer

Posted: 2019-06-06

Summer is a great time to take your family out and try some outdoor activities. On the other hand, staying at home when the heat becomes intolerable is just something you should be prepared for. Besides, you probably aren’t going on a vacation for three straight months, are you? When the fun and excitement of your out of town trips are over, it’s time for you to get back home. And we’re sure you’d like to go home to a cozy, breezy, comfy abode.

On a more serious note, summertime can be quite dangerous for anyone, especially if you have children or the elderly living with you. Some people are at risk of severe health effects, and to some degree, death from being overheated.

While we’re weeks away from suffocating temperatures, Four Seasons Air Specialists, your trusted HVAC company in Shoreview MN, offers tips on how to get your home set for the summer.

Fine-tune your air conditioner.

This is the best time to make sure your AC unit is prepared for the playoffs. If you realize your air conditioner is not in perfect condition, you need to get it ready before the weather becomes too much to bear.

The first thing you need to check is the filter, which is responsible for making sure your air conditioner has proper airflow and makes sure the whole system runs without a hitch. If you have a replaceable type of filter, get a new one from your local home improvement store. If you have a reusable one, clear it from any dirt, debris, or particles that can hinder proper airflow.

Then, test the AC unit to make sure it is working as it should. Leave the system on while you’re away and see how it works. To make sure the thermostat is working properly, set a thermostat on the supply register that’s closest to the inside of the unit. Keep it there for about 5 minutes and write down the temperature. Repeat the process at the return vent. The air coming out should be about 14 to 20 degrees cooler than the air going in. If it fails to cool to those levels, your AC is probably low on refrigerant or has leaks. This is where you would need an HVAC professional to come and fix it for you.

Clean up.

During the summer, the sun will definitely draw heaps of dust so you would have to do a lot of vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing, and mopping. Clean up your home to make sure your air conditioner does not re-circulate dirty, contaminated air.

This is also the perfect time for you to clean your fans. Take some time to dust and wash them. A nice hack to avoid circulating dust from fans is to use an old pillowcase to clean your fan blades, which lets you gather the dust inside the pillowcase.

In addition, add some fresh plants or flowers to make your indoor space feel a little bit more alive. Not only do plants beautify your home, they also help you feel good and relaxed.

If the outside of your home needs some clearing, do so. Start by trimming plants and shrubs. Your AC’s outdoor component should be able to easily pull in air to cool your home when its background is clear. To achieve this, be sure to clear any vegetation from the surrounding area, including gardens at least two feet away from the unit.

Be prepared for bugs.

No one wants their home to be bug infested. Since these insects are trying to escape the heat themselves, they tend to find comfort in your snug, cool home. This is the time when insects thrive since they are unable to develop during the cold months.

To keep the bugs out, be sure that your home is properly sealed. Check your windows and doors and seal any gaps or cracks that can be an entryway for insects.

For a more professional approach on dealing with bugs, call a pest control specialist, who can spray the outside of your home with insecticide. Ask him to use natural solutions to safeguard your home against nasty crawlers and pests.
